Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the option to question particular decisions made by the official, following the practice already in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move follows just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
