Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" observation subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Before this match, Stokes said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

This means, the home team require four wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

A loss will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term place in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk externally. There's no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
